COD LADIES V CARRICK
City of Derry Ladies 27 Carrick Ladies 0
On Sunday City of Derry RFC Ladies faced Carrick Ladies at Judges Road in
the All Ireland Cup. On a perfect day for rugby the Derry girls showed
their determination right from the kick off pinning Carrick back in their
own half in the opening minutes. After a frantic start the Derry pack
really fronted up taking on the Carrick eight and pushing them back with a
series of mauls which saw Deirdre Crabtree being driven to score.
There was no let up from the home side with the Derry scrummage putting
huge pressure on Carrick. This allowed the Derry backline the time to
finally get quick ball and show how strong an attacking side they can be. A
great run by Clodagh McCool saw Derry go over again but was called back for
a foot in touch. Derry were relentless in their pursuit of another score
and it wasn't long before the pack took over again and the strong running
No 8 Stacey Jackson did what she does best going forward at pace to score
near the post with Suzy Tinney adding the conversion.
After the break Derry made sure this match wasn't going to slip away. The
strong scrummaging from the tight five allowed the Derry No 2, Kerri "Dora"
McLaughlin, to consistently take the Carrick ball in the scrum allowing
quick ball to the backs. Teresa Dunne marshalled the back line well
varying the play to keep Carrick guessing. A number of scoring
opportunities went begging for Derry until the ball eventually came to
McCool in open space which saw her use her pace to get the touchdown
putting the home side three scores ahead.
Carrick didn't know what to do to contain the Derry team, in defence some
fine tackling from Kelly Holmes, Kerri McLaughlin, Miranda Verner and
Glenda Fleming kept Carrick in check; whilst in attack Deirdre Crabtree
showed that she is more that a fine scrummager, selling dummies and showing
the footwork of a ballerina. Derry now had the confidence to throw the
ball around which saw Stacey Jackson claim her second try with the ball
being moved through the hands beautifully. The fifth and final try of the
day came from a great backline move with the ball being moved left quickly
for full back Tinney to come into the line at pace to cross for her first
ever try.
This was a great all round performance from the Derry squad who played with
determination and composure throughout to see them through to the next
round. The girls play Armagh at home next in a rearranged league fixture.
