City of Derry RFC U18 Match Report

City of Derry RFC U18 Match Report
(vs Rainey OB, 27/10/18)

On Saturday, the Under 18s welcomed Rainey OB to a cold and windy Craig Thompson Stadium in a much anticipated top of the table clash. The Derry side have been second best to the Magherafelt men over the past few seasons but this newly motivated squad wanted to change that statistic. The men in green and black started the match in the best possible way with Adam Pollock scoring in yet another league match with captain Mark Grant again converting, leaving the score 7-0 with less than 3 minutes played.

The Derry pack showed their domination again at the scrum but at a cost, as they lost tight head Ben McGarvey to an elbow injury after the Rainey prop caved under pressure, Oisin Taylor came on after 10mins. The early pressure seemed to waken the Magherafelt men who scored after some great handling. The conversion could not be converted leaving the score 7-5 half way through the first half.

Derry responded well, re-grouping from the kick off. Dara Gill chased hard causing a turn over that lead to a Derry penalty being kicked into the Rainey 22m. From here, Derry were able to build phase after phase until vice captain Conor Mullin slid over from the base of the scrum 5m out, converted by Mark Grant. This was one of the final plays of the half leaving the score 14-5 at half time. At half time Derry made one change with Luke Gallagher coming onto the wing for Robert Roarty.

Derry where now playing into the wind and hail stones in the second half. After 10mins, Derry lost inspirational flanker Dara Gill to a hamstring injury. Gill was struggling with the strain from the warm up but you would not have noticed as he put in a man of the match performance in the first 45 mins, Daire McDermott came onto the back row. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before McDermott returned to the dugout for reacting to some Rainey indiscipline resulting in both players being sin binned.

The second half was a very tight affair with both teams knowing the next side to score would have a massive impact on the game. With 15mins to go, Ruairi Harkin was sin binned for not retreating and tackling the Rainey scrum half as he took a quick tap.
With the size of the squad that Derry have this season, they had the luxury of getting fresh legs on at a vital time of the match, Lee Broadbent and Corey Doherty replaced Adam Cullen and Oisin Taylor in the front row and Sean Curran making his return to rugby in the second row. The changes showed the depth and competition within the squad with nobody taking a backward step. With 5 mins to go, Mark Grant crashed over the line after the team showed great patience and control of the ball. The conversion was unsuccessful leaving the final score 19 - 5 to Derry.

Derry remain top of the league with 5 wins out of 5. The squad would like to thank all those that braved the conditions to show their support and also to referee Richard Gillen who stepped in at late notice to ensure the game went a head. Next week, Derry travel to Ballymena which will be another top of the table clash as the Braid men currently sit in second place.
