City of Derry RFC U16 Match Report
(vs Rainey OB, 27/10/18)
CDRFC U16’s 3-12 Rainey OB U16’s

Derry were looking to make it a fourth win in a row this weekend and keep their hopes of coming 1st and winning back to back league titles alive. On the other hand, Rainey were looking to bounce back after losing narrowly to Coleraine and coming up short against league leaders Letterkenny.

From the first whistle, Derry received and looked strong in attack, going through the phases and getting over the gain line, whilst the backline made good ground putting Rainey under immense pressure. Strong carries from Kristian Slater and Adam Coyle allowed us to make it into Rainey’s 22 but unfortunately, bad decision making resulted in us getting turned over and having to go back to where we started.

Derry’s defence was pedestrian, allowing Rainey play it out wide into the space. Luckily a few handling errors from the opposition stopped them from scoring. However, our tackles were too soft and they were making too much ground. Eventually Rainey crossed the white wash and converted it to make it 0-7.

For the remainder of the half, Derry struggled to make any ground and kept getting turned over in the rucks and running into contact. Just before the half ended, Derry got 3 points when a penalty gave Alex Thompson a kick at the posts.
Half time score: Derry 3- 7 Rainey OB.

The second half wasn’t much better for Derry, apart from the weather turning to hail stones. Once again, the Derry tackling wasn’t good and allowed Rainey to gain ground and put Derry under a lot of pressure. Eventually, Rainey pushed through and forced the ball to be touched down for a 5m scrum, from this scrum, they scored another try. Making it 3-12 to Rainey.

As the game continued, Derry made countless handling errors and failed to look like a threat in attack. Unluckily, Adam Coyle the Derry hooker, sustained an injury and was taken off. Shortly after, we went down to 14 when Jacob Cole suffered bang on the head and was taken off as a precaution. Derry had one further shot at goal, but it was pushed wide. For the rest of the game, it was all Rainey but Derry held out till the final whistle.

Final score:
City of Derry U16’s 3 – 12 Rainey OB U16’s

A very disappointing game from our perspective. As stated above, tackling, decision making, and not playing as a team resulted in us losing. This is a major wakeup call as for the past few weeks we’ve got into a complacent attitude from playing teams that we can put 50 unanswered points past. We as a squad have to take full responsibility for this and make amends for it next week when we go up against Ballymena. In training we will look to improve our game based on how we played on Saturday, but it takes commitment, hard work and discipline to do so, with that said, this weeks training should be a lot different in terms of attitude.
